What is VoIP?
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology is a set of protocols that facilitate phone calls over an IP network, such as the Internet. VoIP phone calls can be established between computers, between mobile phones and between a VoIP device and a traditional telephone.
How does it work?
A device with VoIP capability may use broadband (DSL or cable), WLAN (IEEE 802.11) or mobile network access to make a VoIP phone call. VoIP software enables calls between a variety of compatible technology platforms such as computers and mobile phones. However, a common communication standard is required to achieve this. Currently the market is still at such an early phase that it is having several protocols, but hopefully in the future there will be open standards to ensure full interoperability.
About VoIP
VoIP is a complementary technology to cellular network technologies. Nokia will continue to promote standards-based solutions that enable interoperability between different types of mobile devices and networks.
